We are proud to announce that Ashvin Hosangadi, alongside lead author Prof. Cheng Huang (University of Kansas) and co-author Dr. Charles Merkle (Purdue University), has been awarded the prestigious 2024 AIAA Liquid Propulsion Best Paper Award at the AIAA SciTech Forum. Their paper, “Investigations of Multi-Zonal Modeling Strategy for Rocket Combustion Dynamics”, was recognized for its outstanding contribution to the field of rocket propulsion research. Congratulations to the entire team for this significant achievement!

Abstract: Even with advances in modern computational capabilities, high-fidelity (e.g., large eddy) simulations of rocket combustors remain expensive. In this work, we develop a multi-zonal modeling framework to enable accurate and efficient predictions of combustion dynamics in rocket combustors. The framework decomposed the full domain into two parts – the upstream and downstream components and applies full-order model (e.g., large-eddy simulations) for the upstream component (i.e., all the injectors) while adopts projection-based reduced-order model for the downstream component (i.e., combustor and nozzle). The proposed modeling framework is demonstrated using both 2D seven-element and 3D nine-element model rocket combustors and is able to provide accurate predictions of the combustion instability characteristics in the problems.
